Coalition Leadership

Coalition Leadership Team

At National Gathering 2011 in Tampa, Coalition members voted in favor of restructure and to elect new leadership. The new “Leadership Team” will launch a two-year churchwide consultation on the future of LGBT ministry and advocacy in the UCC, while at the same time secure the Coalition’s financial foundation to allow for an ambitious plan to strengthen and expand the Coalition’s Open and Affirming ministry.

The Leadership Team will serve as the Coalition's Board of Directors during this consultation period.

Yvette Flunder

Bishop Yvette Flunder is a third generation preacher with roots in the Church of God in Christ and is also an ordained Minister of the United Church of Christ. She founded the City of Refuge UCC in San Francisco in 1991 in order to unite a gospel ministry with a social ministry. A graduate of the Ministry Studies and Master of Arts programs at the Pacific School of Religion, she went on to receive a Doctor of Ministry degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary. In 2003, Bishop Flunder was consecrated Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship, a multi-denominational fellowship of 110 primarily African American Christian leaders and laity representing 56 churches and faith-based organizations from all parts of the United States, Mexico and Africa.

Julie Kilmer

The Rev. Dr. Julie J. Kilmer teaches at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit. She is also a hospice chaplain. She serves as the Coalition representative to the Executive Council of the UCC and has served in the past as the Coalition representative to the UCC Office of General Ministries Board. Julie and her partner Cheryl live in Eagle, MI with their three children. Julie is an at-large member of the Leadership Team.

Phil Porter

Phil Porter is the Minister of Art & Communication at First Congregational Church of Berkeley. He has been involved in the Coalition for over 30 years, including 6 years as Moderator of the Coalition Council (at a time when he still had quite a bit of hair.) He has served in a variety of national committees including two of the UCC restructuring task forces and the search committee that recommended Rev. Geoffrey Black for General Minister and President. He is also the co‐founder of InterPlay, a global social movement dedicated to ease, connection, human sustainability and play. Phil is moderator of the Coalition.

Ammon Ripple

Ammon Ripple works with local and regional ecumenical and interfaith communities at the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA. He was a faculty librarian and library administrator at the University of Pittsburgh for 13 years before answering a call to ordained ministry. He received an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 2010 and is discerning ordination as a member of Broadway UCC in Manhattan. Ammon preaches part‐time at First Congregational Church of Woodbridge, New Jersey, and has served as Chair of the UCC Coalition Nominating Committee. Ammon is the Coalition's treasurer.

Enzi Tanner

Enzi Tanner is a Black American transgender spoken‐word artist. He currently attends United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities where he is pursuing a Masters of Divinity with an emphasis on peace and justice. Enzi is currently seeking ordination in the United Church of Christ. As a street‐based outreach worker for Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota, Enzi connects at‐risk and homeless youth with resources. He has committed his life to community organizing in areas of intersections, in particular where issues of race, gender, sexuality, faith and economic justice collide. He is steward of intersectionality for the UCC Genderfold Alliance and a leader in TransSaints, a ministry of The Fellowship. Enzi is vice-moderator of the Coalition.

Rebecca Voelkel

The Rev. Rebecca Voelkel, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, is the Institute for Welcoming Resources and Faith Work Director for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Before coming to the Task Force, she served as Interim National Coordinator for the UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns, as pastor of Spirit of the Lakes United Church of Christ and as Program Staff for the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Violence. She is a faith‐based community organizing trainer as well as workshop presenter on a wide variety of faith‐based justice issues. Rebecca and her partner, Maggie, are parents of Shannon MacKenzie, their four year‐old daughter. Rebecca is the Coalition's secretary.

Barbara Mason Rathbun

The Rev. Barbara Mason Rathbun is co-chair of the Southern Conference's Re/ Structuring Action Team. She is a contributing writer for the UCC's "Faith Practices" resource. Her career as a pastor has included posts in Indiana and North Carolina. She is an avid quilter, reader and musician. Barbara is the immediate past-moderator of the Coalition and meets with the Leadership Team as a transitional advisor.

Michael Schuenemeyer

The Rev. Mike Schuenemeyer is minister for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender concerns in the UCC's national office and executive for health and wholeness advocacy in Wider Church Ministries. His leadership helped secure passage of General Synod resolutions supporting marriage equality and international human rights for LGBT people. Mike was executive producer for the film, “Call Me Malcolm,” and serves as executive director for UCAN Inc., the UCC HIV and AIDS Network. He is national staff representative and serves ex officio on the Coalition’s Leadership Team.

Andy Lang

Andy Lang has 18 years of experience as a communications professional in the United Church of Christ. He was a daily newspaper reporter and a Congressional public- relations specialist in Washington, D.C. before moving to Cleveland to join the national communications staff in 1993. His passion is to reach the 4,000 UCC congregations that have not yet adopted an ONA covenant. Andy has been the Coalition's executive director since April 2011 and serves ex officio on the Coalition’s Leadership Team.

Other Coalition Leaders

Jake Joseph

Jake Joseph is a member of Plymouth Congregational UCC in Fort Collins, Colorado where he is a Member in Discernment with the Platte Valley Association of the Rocky Mountain Conference. Jake graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa with a degree in French, and he is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. In addition to his local work with the UCC in Atlanta, Jake serves as a board member of Justice and Witness Ministries and as a UCC Coalition Representative and a Co-Chair for the Council for Youth and Young Adult Ministry (CYYAM).

Julia LeBrell

Julia LeBrell is an LGBTQ and education activist based in Michigan, who received her B.S. in Ecology from Beloit College. She is head deacon at St. Paul’s UCC in Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and Coalition Young Adult Representative to the Council for Youth and Young Adult Ministries. She is also a board member and Jump Start Adult Coordinator for the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network- Southeast Michigan chapter and cofounder of the Southeast Michigan Dyke March. When not rewriting her to-do lists or loudly talking with people about social justice issues, she’s squeezing in some quality tv watching time. If one is feeling daring, ask her about Glee. Julia is a Coalition Representative to the UCC Council for Youth and Young Adult Ministries (CYYAM).

Anthony W. Sullivan, Jr.

The Rev. Anthony W. Sullivan, Jr. currently serves in ministry as Associate Pastor at the Pillar of Love Fellowship United Church of Christ near Chicago and on the Council of the Chicago Metropolitan Association of the UCC. Anthony also serves as the Regional Executive Assistant for the Midwest Region of The Fellowship. He is committed to radical inclusion characterized by reconciliation, liberation and inclusiveness for all people, especially those who have traditionally lived at the margins of society, such as people suffering from substance abuse; people living with HIV/AIDS; same gender loving people and those who are incarcerated. He works for the Administration for Children and Families within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Anthony shares his journey with life partner, Michael, and their teenage daughter Imani. Anthony serves as the Coalition Representative to the UCC Justice and Witness Ministries Board.

The Coalition relies on volunteers to fuel its work in the church and society.  The Coalition's staff support the board of directors and coordinate the efforts of the larger community.
