Welcome to New Office Staff

We are happy to announce that Greg Harig has been hired to fill the new administrative assistant role in our Cleveland, OH, office. Greg has experience with another non-profit; he sits on the board of North Coast Men's Chorus. We will share him with his other job at Things Remembered. Welcome, Greg!

As we described last month, the part-time Administrative Assistant has responsibilities for reception, data base maintenance, and on-going clerical tasks. Thus, the three Cleveland staff members (Ruth, Michelle, and Greg) will each have important roles supporting the Coalition membership and our programming.

You may hear Greg's voice, as Administrative Assistant, when you call the office. As Project Director, Michelle will be your first point of contact for the ONA program—while also providing various administrative and programmatic leadership. And, as Executive Director, Ruth will continue to serve as the primary spokesperson for the Coalition.

Coalition responds to UCC Increased Giving

Ruth Garwood

Our executive director, Ruth Garwood, had a flurry of activity this past month as the UCC reported that voluntary contributions to Our Church's Wider Mission increased in 2007. The full UCC press release is available on our website (http://www.ucccoalition.org/).

Ruth and other members of the Religious Leadership Roundtable were asked to respond to the report, since it comes on the tails of the UCC's controversial support of same-sex marriage.

When churches accept risk and still step out into courage, they discover new joys in their life together.

The United Church of Christ has taken public prophetic stands that are controversial and the denomination thrives. In 2005, when the General Synod passed a resolution supporting marriage equality, some people predicted the precipitous decline of the church. In 2007, however, church members affirmed their commitment to the shared ministries of the UCC tangibly: by increasing their financial support of the UCC.

Our Seventh ONA Campus Ministry

A new campus ministry, God-Talk @ USF: A Progressive Christian Student Organization (at the University of South Florida in Tampa), has begun with seed money from the UCC’s Florida Conference. At one of the early meetings of the group, in January 2008, the members adopted a Covenant of Openness and Affirmation, making God-Talk @ USF only the seventh ONA campus ministry in the UCC in this country.

YYA says Thanks!

The YYA program gives a hearty thank you to two repeat volunteers. Carri Hoagland presented workshops at UCC-related Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. She also helped facilitate a conversation about developing "safe space" in the city of Ashland. Betzi Yungclas participated in the New York Youth Event in Painted Post. She presented a workshop called suicideTALK twice, and was available during "safe space" time.

National Day of Silence (April 25)

This year’s National Day of Silence on April 25 will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old California student who was shot and killed at school in February by a 14-year-old classmate because of King’s sexual orientation and gender expression.

The Day of Silence is held by students every year to bring attention to anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) name-calling, bullying and harassment. The senseless tragedy at E.O. Green Junior High in Oxnard, CA, brings even more meaning to a day that has brought hope to millions of students.

For more information refer to www.dayofsilence.org.
