Ripples - October 2008

Welcome to the e-newsletter of The UCC Coalition for LGBT Concerns.

Making History...

As LGBT History Month comes to a close, we celebrate the progress of the LGBT advocacy movement, knowing that without the courageous, persistent and faithful people who preceded us (many of whom are still among us), we would not have reached the point where, in an increasing number of settings, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities are visible and welcome. The Coalition lists 758 ONA churches, has a presence at UCC national and regional youth events, and develops and nurtures leaders in all settings of the church.

We celebrate history, and we have the opportunity to make history. No matter where you are in the country, you can take action in the California campaign to preserve marriage equality. In May, the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in California. Those rights are threatened by Proposition 8, which would change the California constitution to eliminate that freedom to marry.

The No on Prop 8 Campaign needs your support, in financial contributions, in telephoning voters to educate them, and in encouraging your California friends, family, and colleagues to Vote No.

To find out how to participate, go to www.noonProp8.com

Please take action to make a difference.

More on California's Proposition 8

MacArthur Flournoy is a member of The Coalition and of The Fellowship and has been working hard this election season on Proposition 8, the California ballot issue that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.

AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR BELOVED COMMUNITY
Written by MacArthur H. Flournoy

...In my prayerful reflection I have come to see [Proposition 8] as yet another ploy to distract our attention critical issues that affect all of [our] lives.... Make no mistake - I rise to stand in strong solidarity with my LGBT sisters and brothers to defeat this hate filled and divisive measure that can only estrange us further one from another...

But I am compelled to ask a larger question. When issues [arise] of racism, discrimination, sexism, misogyny, violence against women, racial profiling, false imprisonment of people of color, will the mainstream LGBT community stand with us, in like manner, marshal unprecedented fund raising efforts, mobilize voter education campaigns and work as enthusiastically to cut this gangrenous toxicity from our society? Will you be there for us defending justice as vociferously as you have for marriage equality? ...

Make no mistake; the eyes of the nation are upon us... Allow me to encourage you to ensure that every family member, friend, co-worker, church member, and associate is registered to vote; and let a resounding NO on 8 ring for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all Americans.

Why Vote No?

People can go to whyvoteno.net and see pictures and read statements/stories from people all over the world about why they oppose Prop 8.  It puts real human faces and human stories on this issue. What the site needs is more people to go online and upload their pics and stories.  It takes about 5 minutes.

A Call to Action

What happens in California has important implications in the struggle for justice and equality throughout the country. Along with California, there are ballot initiatives on marriage equality in Arizona and Florida.  Like Proposition 8 in California, Proposition 2 in Florida and Proposition 102 in Arizona would block marriage rights for same-sex couples. The vote margin is razor thin, and so we are working hard to win the hearts and minds of undecided voters in California.

Although Californians are the only individuals able to vote on Proposition 8, there are ways everyone can help protect marriage equality, whether or not you live in California.  Wherever you are, we are asking for your help to support marriage equality by joining the effort to defeat Proposition 8. For guidelines on how to engage in ballot initiative work, refer to www.ucc.org/ourfaithourvote/pdfs/Ballot-Measures.pdf

Background

Just over four months ago, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality.  A few weeks later, two very important things happened. Same-sex couples were able to be legally married in California, and opponents of same-sex marriage qualified a measure for the November 4 ballot, Proposition 8.  If passed, Proposition 8 will take the right to marry away from same-sex couples by amending the state’s constitution. At their annual meetings last spring, both California UCC conferences affirmed the California Supreme Court’s decision and their support for marriage equality. Conference Ministers Mary Susan Gast (Northern CA NV Conference) and Jane Fisler Hoffman (Southern CA NV Conference) issued a joint statement calling for the defeat of Proposition 8. To access the 25th UCC General Synod resolution Equal Marriage Rights for All, refer to www.ucc.org/assets/pdfs/2005-EQUAL-MARRIAGE-RIGHTS-FOR-ALL.pdf.

Getting on the phones

New technology allows us to enlist your energy to talk one-on-one to undecided California voters.  Reaching out to them is the single most important act you can take to help us win on November 4. Phone banks can be established in your congregations, homes, and/or on your own in California and throughout the U.S.  Go to this link: www.noonprop8.com/wecallvoters and help us double our phone banks and reach out to every Californian who needs more information and wants to have a one-on-one conversation.  If you have ever said you wished that there were more that you could do, NOW is the moment to act.

Making and soliciting donations

Every individual can go to http://www.noonprop8.com/ and donate today! We can win only by getting our message out, and we need your help to make it happen.   If you've already donated, please do so again!  Now is the time for sacrificial giving.  Every contribution makes a difference.  Please be as generous as you can.  [Note: These gifts are important, but they are not tax deductible.]

For those who live in California, there are leadership teams in both United Church of Christ Conferences in the state coordinating efforts and providing assistance to individuals, congregations, and other settings of the church.  Please contact your Conference’s coordinator for information on how you and your congregation can get involved.

2008 National Youth Event was a Huge Success!

Noah Gillespie
Ruth, Jennifer, and Tim

The 2008 UCC National Youth Event needs to be remembered as unique to the Coalition for several reasons. It was a wonderful event for us!

We have built our capacity to the point where nine volunteers and two
staff were present at the NYE.  Volunteers & Staff: Erik Koepnik, Betzi Yungclas, Beau Heyen & youth group from Cathedral of Hope, Lucy Brady, Roma Paganiban (youth), Kait Cox (youth), Jennifer Spears, Sarah Lohrbach, Noah Gillespie, Bill Walsh, Ruth Garwood, Timothy Brown

Over 475 people (of approximately 2,800 attendees - 16%) took our
workshops. In addition, Health & Wholeness Advocacy offered 3 workshops. A first among the workshop listings at NYE was a transgender workshop for youth. Workshops: Biblical Self-Defense, suicideTALK, Ho-Ho-Homophobia, How to Be a Straight Ally, My Dad's Gay and I'm Not, Gender and Beyond, ONA-Spirited Youth, The ONA Process at Your Church, Mentoring Queer Youth, Our Stories, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

We are assessing the safety of our youth groups for lgbt youth. We again distributed the safe-climate survey. Approximately 175 were completed and returned.

We were visible in several ways at the NYE:

  • YYAs carried the Coalition banner in the opening parade.
  • Safe Space was listed in the NYE Program book.
  • Our workshops were listed in the workshop book.
  • Our numerous volunteers & staff networked with innumerable people.
  • We had display tables in the exhibit hall.

I am glad to be in a denomination in which we can participate so fully and openly!

We sold resources and gave out materials.
We sold quite a number of buttons and shirts. We put our materials on CDs to distribute. About 190 CDs were distributed.

We offered a safe place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, same-gender-loving youth.  A drop-in space was available for seven time slots throughout the NYE, during each recreation and optional activities time.

We are developing new listservs. Sign-up sheets were available for our two new listservs: a Youth Ministers Listserv and a Youth Allies Listserv.

Blogging in Central Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Central Conference area conference minister, the Rev. Allen Fluent, recently proposed the development of a blog for their ONA and "inclusive" congregations.

http://souljourneysincpa.blogspot.com

"This is my first effort ever to attempt a blog. I'm absolutely the least technologically inclined member of our Conference staff," says Fluent.  He didn't let the technology get in the way of his goal and now he's reaching out to learn more about networking through the internet.  Check out his blog and spread the word!

What Can We Do to Stop Bullying?

The UCC Children’s Staff Table has created a new web page, "Bullying: What We Can Do to Stop It."  Bullying is a form of abuse of power, when one young person or a peer group abuses a vulnerable young person over a period of time.  Bullying happens at school, at church, and in all kinds of communities—in fact in every community—but there is hopeful evidence that a community or a school or a church can take steps to create a culture of respect that reduces bullying.  Staff will continue to develop the resources on this webpage, which now contains information and definitions, important links, reflection pieces, and worship resources.

Congratulations and Thank You, MCC!

This October, the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) denomination has been celebrating its 40th anniversary. MCC began with just 12 worshipers gathered in a Huntington Park (Los Angeles area) living room in 1968.  That gathering has grown into the world's first Christian denomination with a primary, affirming ministry to the LGBT community. Today, MCC worldwide includes 300 churches, church plants, and organizing groups located in 28 countries.

While so many LGBT-affirming religious groups focus on work within U.S., MCC continues to take a pioneering role in supporting LGBT Christians around the world.  They serve as a lifeline for people around the world who are in harm's way because of their sexual identity.

More personally, so many LGBT folks of all denominations have found sanctuary in MCC churches on our own journeys.  "If there are any out, LGBT pastors of any denomination that have never set foot inside an MCC church, then I sure haven't met them," says Chris Paige.

Thank you to Troy Perry, Nancy Wilson, Cindi Love, and all of the MCCers around the globe who are continuing to change the world.
