Ripples - September 2009

Board of Directors Nominations Update

The board of directors is seeking an executive director search committee with seven members.  So far, we have received a verbal commitment from only one individual willing to serve on the search committee. With only two weeks before the original September 30, 2009, meeting date there is not time for the nominating committee to receive applications, review the applications, and submit a slate with bios in advance of the meeting. Therefore, we have moved the membership meeting back about a month to allow for further recruitment.

The board will be taking a more active role in seeking out people to serve on the search committee, but we still welcome applications from people who feel called to this endeavor.

The UCC Coalition board of directors invites your nominations for the board of directors, executive director search committee, and 2010 national gathering planning committee. An online nomination form is available. For more information, please review the full announcement.

Hostility against LGBT Youth Increases in Rural, Low-Income Areas

In a September 9, 2009, article, School Library Journal (http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/article/CA6687521.html?rssid=190) reports:

Discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth often increases in rural and so-called impoverished areas, according to a new report by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which believes school librarians can play a significant role in helping to stem this kind of harassment. “We’ve found that having a supportive school staff member can help mitigate these effects,” says Emily Greytak, senior research associate at GLSEN.

The article goes on to talk about GLSEN's partnership with the American Library Association (ALA) to help librarians identify ways to assist students.

GLSEN offers a Safe Space Kit on its Web site along with other tips and resources for educators on how to help LGBT students who need a protected space from other children—and perhaps even their families—so they can find answers to questions they’re having. Suicide is 100% Preventable

We've been highlighting the Youth and Young Adult Program (YYA) of the UCC Coalition.  The YYA program is important because LGBTQ youth too often still face stigma, isolation, and bullying.  Such stresses leave LGBTQ youth vulnerable to violence, suicide, and substance abuse, but you can make a difference.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Educate yourself. Break the silence.  Be prepared to recognize warning signs and provide support for those who may be considering suicide.

  • TransFaith Online has developed an extensive Suicide Prevention InterSection, with links to a variety of further resources. To learn more, visit www.transfaithonline.org/go/suicide

Saving Lives through ASIST and the Coalition

Betzi Yungclas

From Betzi Yungclas, volunteer ASIST trainer for the UCC Coalition:

Teaching ASIST is one of the best experiences in my life. Each time I know that there are a few more people out there that are now able to see and hear signs of people at risk of suicide and then know what steps to take to help.

The last time I taught ASIST, within a week I know of 3 people from the training that helped someone at risk of suicide using the training that they just received. If they hadn't had the training, maybe those 3 people at risk would no longer be with us.

I love teaching ASIST because I know it works. It is designed for anyone that is ever around people. So if you are ever around people, you should sign up for the 2-day ASIST workshop!

NEW RESOURCE: Just Say Know: A Faith-Based Advocacy Guide for Sexuality Education

The Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice, and Healing has just released a new online guide, "Just Say Know: A Faith-Based Advocacy Guide for Sexuality Education."

The online guide is designed to help clergy and religious and lay leaders advocate for sexuality education in the public schools. It includes worship resources, fact sheets, theological grounding for sexuality education, information about what is happening at the state and national levels, media suggestions, bibliographies, and much more. It will also help secular sexuality education advocates to demonstrate faith-based support for sexuality education.
