López Scholarship for Latina & Latino UCC SeminariansCelebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by supporting the Lopez Scholarship! The López Scholarship is a new initiative developed as a four-way covenant between the Council for Hispanic Ministries, Local Church Ministries, Justice and Witness Ministries, and Wider Church Ministries of the UCC. This initiative is creating a scholarship to ensure that the UCC will have Latinas and Latinos who are prepared for Christian ministry by focusing on the Hispanic Ministries Implementation Team’s four primary goals of leadership development, stewardship, theological education, and church development. These future ministers, educated in one of the seven socially and theologically progressive seminaries of the UCC, will return to minister to Latino constituencies and multicultural communities equipped to proclaim the liberating Gospel message of salvation, full-inclusion, justice, and peace. This new scholarship is named in honor of the Rev. Dr. Héctor Edmundo López, a laborer in the journey for racial justice. The Rev. Dr. López is the first Latino ordained in the UCC and the first Latino UCC Conference Minister in the mainland USA. To learn more or to contribute, please visit www.ucc.org/lopez/. Exploring Solutions: How to talk about HIV Prevention in the Church"Exploring Solutions: How to talk about HIV Prevention in the Church" is a new guide aimed at helping Christians to talk openly, accurately, and compassionately about why HIV spreads and what they can do as individuals and communities to stop the transmission of the virus. "While churches have been leaders in caring for people affected by HIV and AIDS," says Linda Hartke, coordinator of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, "church people and others have often been too silent or judgmental about how people get the virus because it touches on issues like sex and drug use. We hope this guide helps people discuss in a respectful environment not just personal behavior but conditions in society that make some people much more vulnerable to infection." The 44-page guide, published by the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, is available for free in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Copies can be downloaded or ordered at: http://www.e-alliance.ch/hivaids_exploringsolutions.jsp The Coalition's 2007 Annual ReportThe Coalition's Annual 2007 Annual Report was also presented at One Tribe, One Table.
