Equality in Marriage: How Can I Help?

The following are a number of ideas on how you can work on creating equality in marriage. They are ideas meant to be instructive, not prescriptive. So take what is helpful and discard what is not.

To plan a discussion/training in your local church, employ the following strategies:

1. Gather a group or “Steering Committee” to shepherd this project in your church or community. Try to find those who are representative of the diversity in your community—lgbt/same-gender loving and allied, racial and ethnic representatives, disabled and able-bodied, various ages, etc. Agree on a time for a meeting.

2. Download the resource “Called to Equality” from this website and review it.

3. Download the resource “God is Still Speaking… About Marriage” from www.ucc.org and review it.

4. Set a time for a discussion in your church.

5. Identify the folks you want to attend.

6. Call, email, write letters, talk with folks and generally get out the word about the event(s).

7. Get commitments from folks that they are coming.

8. Plan the event with your Steering Committee—figure out who will lead, the logistics, how you will set the space, do the worship and facilitate the group coming to know one another.

9. Do the training. (Make sure they have access to all the resources you have and that they know who they can contact if they need assistance)

10. Be sure to get a clear list of all the folks who are at the event, including address, email and phone contact information. (Please forward copies of these lists to the Coalition at NationalCoord@uccCoalition.org.)

11. Provide the folks who attended with any additional information they request.

12. Remain in contact with your folks—email updates, links to what other people are doing, etc.

13. Let us know what creative ideas/stories folks have—to be used on the website, in WAVES, etc. You can email us at NationalCoord@uccCoalition.org

14. Participate in the discussion boards to share your experiences and ideas with others.
