ASIST: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

We have been able to offer this internationally recognized training program with a special focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth and young adults. The ASIST workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. This workshop is offered by Coalition staff and volunteers.

ASIST is an internationally recognized Evidence-Based Practice designed to teach professionals and non-professionals alike how to recognize suicide risk and what to say and do to keep the person safe until the next level of help can become involved (see: www.livingworks.net).

ASIST provides a practical approach for all caregivers to follow when encountering a suicidal person. Participants learn how:

1) personal attitudes impact suicide intervention,
2) to identify and address suicide risk alerts,
3) to use an effective suicide intervention model, and
4) to network with community resources for a suicide-safer community.

This unique workshop includes a special focus on the issues of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth and young adults.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training teaches suicide "first aid." The role plays, along with other ways to learn, has made me feel more equipped to hear when someone is at risk for suicide, and more able to keep someone safe. Ruth Garwood
